Second Grade Update – Week of 5/6

Dear Second Grade Families,

Happy Friday!

A big thank you for supporting your child with their hero square. Students did a wonderful job presenting them to the class! We can all be inspired by the individuals your children picked – such a variety! Thank you AGAIN for helping to make this a meaningful project for them. 🙂

Next week, students will have the opportunity to participate in our Student Leadership Council (“SLC”) electionsfor next year! They will listen to SLC candidates share their speeches and then vote for the candidates they think would do the best job for the office. This is such good timing on the heels of our government unit! 🙂

Last, but not least, thank you so much for the birthday gift card and beautiful flowers! They made my day. 🙂

Next week, we have the Spring Concert on Wednesday evening. Please have children to the classroom by 6:50pm.

Below is our second grade learning update.

Focus Areas for Our Learning Next Week:

  • Reading –
    • In reading groups, students will start their new Book Club. We will revisit the types of genres and identify the genre of the current text. Students will identify the main character(s) and setting and make connections to the text. As always, there is a focus on reading fluency and speaking and listening skills as we work together in a small group.
    • At night, students should read aloud to practice fluent reading skills. Please encourage your child to observe punctuation, read at a good pace, and read the words as they appear in the text (no deletions or substitutions).
  • Grammar/Spelling – In Superkids, students will practice decoding and encoding long “i” words. They will also practice irregular comparative and superlative adjectives. Students should practice their spelling words for a quiz on Friday.
  • Writing – Students continue their animal research reports by using a planning page to take notes focused on specific areas of their animal’s life: description, habitat, diet, predators, and family life. Students will practice identifying important information in their books and capturing notes in the correct sections of their planning pages.
  • Math – Students will continue to practice with currency, specifically solving word problems, and making change. We will also review three digit addition and subtraction with regrouping as well as adding three two-digit numbers.
  • Religion – We will start our Family Life unit about God’s gift of love. Students will also play “Jeopardy” to review the parts of the Mass. 🙂
  • Social Studies –The class will solve “The Case of the Missing Money” and discuss the ideas of accusations, evidence, proof, and the role of our judicial branch. Then we will finish our government unit with an assessment.
  • Science – In our new unit, students begin to develop an understanding of the world’s animal biodiversity. They will explore animal classification and the traits that define each group. Students then turn their focus to habitats and how the surrounding environment affects what organisms live in a particular environment.
