Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, June 3,2022

It’s hard to believe that the school year is  almost over. It was a great pleasure to have your children in our class this year. We ALL learned so many things! Your children are so proud and have become more confident in their skills- Reading, Writing, Math, Speaking. This past year, as the days progressed, we all struggled through the changing and evolving Covid protocols. We can never thank you enough for your support and confidence in us.

The year is almost over so we will soon return your children to you- the same children that you entrusted in our care last fall. We return them to you with a few more pounds, a few inches taller and months wiser, more responsible and more mature than back then.

We know that your children would have grown without our help; however we want you to know that  it has been a pleasure and a privilege to see their personalities grow day by day and see how they have developed in their learning.

We have laughed, played, studied and learned; the students have enriched our lives during the year. Continue to take great care of your children because they are so precious and so genuine.

Remember that we will always have a great interest in your children- in their schooling here at St. Philip Neri, in their destinies, wherever they may go, whatever they may do and whoever they become. We are all blessed to be a part of the St. Philip Neri Community.

Your children are almost First Graders! All children have shown growth in their emotional, social and academic education in Kindergarten this year. We will continue with our End of Year Assessments for Superkids as well as continuing assessments in Language Arts and Math this week.

We look forward to seeing our Kindergarteners’ creative talents in conjunction with their Saints Reports this week!  Some students have already sent a video of their saint presentation- some even dressed in costumes and had props! Thank you for assisting your children. We appreciate all of the extra work involved. It’s a great learning experience in preparation for the older grades.

Each grade then “moves” over to the pew where their next grade sits.  Due to current COVID circumstances, parents will not be able to be in the church for this event.  Please join us on the main school yard to watch your Kindergartener transition to the 1st grade line!

Kindergarten Update #2

Dear Parents, May 20.2022

For our last weeks of school, we will be making some changes in the regular routines so please check the weekly letter describing the changes and some fun additions! We will focus on finishing up the last skills in the SuperKid Unit and Bridges Math Curriculum along with end of the year assessments.

As we approach the end of our school year, we want to let you know how much your children have grown this school year.  Many are reading and computing nicely and are ready to tackle the first grade curriculum with success. The challenges of having to adhere to COVID protocols and then adjust as they were lifted, has offered the students (and teachers)  opportunities to grow in a new learning environment. Working in a school community such as St. Philip Neri makes us realize how grateful and blessed we are as teachers; without the parent collaboration and your partnership we could not be successful in the education of your children. Thank you.

We look forward to our End of year Outing with the Kindergarteners on Friday, June 10th. Here are the details:

Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, May, 6,2022

The May Crowning on Wednesday was beautiful. The Kindergarteners together with the Third grade planned the mass. The Third grade honored Mary with special readings and the Kindergarteners carried a beautiful long stemmed red rose up to the altar for Mary. Emily Mathews carried a crown of fresh roses which was then blessed and placed on the statue of Mary. This has been a long time tradition at Saint Philip Neri which will continue as your children move on up through the grades.

Our Fun Run takes place on Tuesday, May 10th. Students may wear appropriate athletic clothing and shoes on May 10th, the day of the run, instead of their uniform.

  • Teachers will provide all students with a FunRun t-shirt. We will hand the t-shirts out on the day of the run. Students will wear their FunRun t-shirts when they run.
  • Be sure to send a water bottle with your child for that day!

Don’t forget about our Spring Concert on Thursday, May 12th. All students are required to be in attendance. Details were sent in last week’s Kindergarten Update and Mr. Q sent an email to all families with the specifics.  Going with the theme of A Prayer for Peace here are the specifics for attire:  For evening concerts, students typically wear “Nice Free Dress” (description on p. 45 of the handbook), and for this concert, bright spring colors are the theme! Students may also dress in the theme of “peace and love” (i.e. clothing with tie dye, flowers, peace signs, or rainbows), but please no jeans or shorts.

The art show and all classrooms will be open from 5:30-6:30 for you to visit and see all of the wonderful art and work that our students have been working on.  This is a great time to see the 1st grade classroom!  All students will need to be in the classroom at 6:30 as parents will need to get their seats in the church for the concert.  Please remember that no students will be dismissed prior to the conclusion of the concert.  Pickup will be along the side gate per our dismissal procedure.

May 21st is the final Family Mass of the year at SPN.  If you would like your child to participate in the 5:15 pm Mass as a reader please email Mrs. Foster for more information.

Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, April 29,2022

In light of the most recent lifting of mask requirements for students, we have removed the plexiglass dividers from the student tables that have been in place since the beginning of the school year.  It is much easier for the students to hear each other as well as to complete work in their collaborative groups and reading groups!   We have also adjusted some seating arrangements in order to ensure a maximum learning environment.  Students are learning to work quietly as well as independently in preparation for First Grade. Students are asked to clear away their distractions, stay on task and complete their work in a timely manner. We are currently working on mid-trimester reports that we will send home next week in the Friday folder.

The month of May is a busy one. Our Spring Concert will be on Thursday, May 12th at 7PM in the church. All students are required to be in attendance for this event.  Information for the dress for this concert will be forthcoming. On that same evening, families are invited into the classrooms to see work that our students have produced during the year. This impromptu Open House will coincide with Celebration of the Arts from 5:30-6:30 p.m. This is a great time to check out your students’ classrooms and also visit the grade levels ahead to see what’s to come. At 6:30 p.m. students return to their classrooms and parents may find seats in the church to prepare for the concert that will begin at 7:00 p.m.

As you know, we are planning a study of the world’s greatest artists with your children this month.  Your child will learn about several of the world’s most famous artists in conjunction with the book EIEIART by author Mari Tzikas Suarez. The students will study the artists, share information that they’ve learned about the artists and create an art piece in the style of the artist.

We are busy preparing a special gift for our moms in honor of Mother’s Day.Those have taken lots of planning and preparation!  Expect them next Friday!

We will have a special prayer service honoring the Feast of St. Philip Neri on Thursday, May 26th.  It will take place in the Main Yard.

In addition to finishing up the last three units in the SuperKids Club this month, students will continue to work on their  Writing Research Unit in which they are encouraged to write and share thoughts and information about an animal. After learning how to prepare a story web about an animal, students then use their story web to create a diagram and label the animal.  They then add detailed sentences and facts with accompanying illustrations to form a book. It has been fun to see what students have accomplished and then to share their creativity! We hope that you enjoyed their books.

Students will have one last project for Kindergarten in the month of May.  It will be a Saint study.  Your child will select any Saint that they would like to learn about, complete a project on and share with the class. Information will go home next week as this is their final monthly project!

Our SuperKid next week is Lucia.

Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, April 8,2022

This past week the students had a busy week preparing for their presentation of “The Story of Moses.” We will finish up this week. In addition, the students have been learning about the meaning of Holy Week and Easter.  The link will be sent out so that you can view the story as well.  Palm Sunday is this Sunday!  We would love to see you at one of the many Mass opportunities!  Holy Week has so many great opportunities for prayer experiences that support what your children have been learning.  Here is the parish bulletin with the Mass times and events for Holy Week (scroll to the last page):  SPNSA Bulletin

As Spring Fever has hit our Kindergarten class with the excitement of Easter, Easter vacation and better weather, we have spent a lot of time reminding students of the six steps for listening and the SLE’s (respectful, responsible, reverent, life-long learner).  It is common at this time of year for students to get excited and need these reminders, especially since this is the first “normal” spring for them in two years!  We will explicitly teach these when we return from break so that the remaining weeks will be focused behaviorally so that we can stay on track for our academic goals.  We appreciate your partnership in enforcing this at home and having conversations daily with your child about listening.

At Mass on Wednesday Fr. Joel talked about the importance of prayer.  He brought each student the Angel of God Prayer on a beautiful laminated prayer card.  They were so excited and honored to receive the gift.  Coincidentally, this is the last prayer that we teach and memorize as part of the K Religion curriculum.

All of the students did a FABULOUS job on their books that they wrote for the month of March homework.  All of the students will have an opportunity to read and share their books with the class. We will finish up this week.

There will be no SuperKid next week. Thank you to Kailyn for sharing your things.

There also will be no Friday folders next week.

Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, April 1, 2022

Reading groups are going well. Here is some background information on the guided reading approach:

The guided reading approach to early literacy is a method that involves teaching small groups of students with similar reading abilities.Teachers who use guided reading groups gather kids of similar reading abilities together — usually creating groups of no more than six students. The goal is to create small groups that the teacher can then work with directly, rather than teaching a whole class of 20-plus kids whose abilities may vary drastically.  Choosing texts that are at a level that’s at or just slightly above the reading levels of the students in the group, teachers will introduce the text to their guided reading group to help the students develop a contextual framework. That can mean anything from going over illustrations to discussing headings, to encouraging the kids to predict what they think will happen. Students are nurtured with the small group approached and challenged to problem-solve in the guided reading process.

Our students are grouped according to skill level and rotate through four stations each time.  One station is  IPADS, one station is independent work and two stations are with the teacher or teacher’s aide.

The students participated in a Virtual Author’s Faire this past week. Students in Grades K-5  took part in a Community Read. A Community Read is like a book club where two or more grades read the same books and do follow-up activities that enhance the reading experience. Kindergarten students read Bitty Bot’s Big Beach Getaway, by Tim McCanna. Each class was provided with worksheets as a follow up to the book reading. A bulletin board will be put together after April 1, containing pictures of the books and authors, and possibly some student work/crafts.

In addition to the Zones of Regulation to help students with their social and emotional growth, we will now begin teaching lessons from a program called Second Step.

Second Step is a program that helps students in identifying feelings, managing strong emotions, solving problems, and getting along with others.  These lessons will take place the week of April 25.

Mrs. Foster has begun to practice “The Story of Moses” with the students in preparation for the Seder.  The video will be shared with families on 4/14.

Our SuperKid this week is Kailyn. Thanks to Lorenzo for sharing his things.

Kindergarten Update

Dear Parents, March 25,2022

As we continue to navigate life as we return to more of the normal routines and events, we want to acknowledge our parent partnership in the education of your children. The lifting of the mask mandate has transitioned with relative ease. Thanks for advising your children with your preference for mask wearing. Some students are continuing to wear masks and others are not; most take their masks off outside. We will continue to keep the plexiglass partitions at the students’ tables in our classroom. We will strive to provide support to parents through our continued planning of lessons for our class in communication with other educators in order to best serve the needs of our students ( and parents.)

Leveled reading groups take place now twice a week in class. We  continue to assess students with informal and formal  testing in order to establish our reading groups.

This week the students will begin to learn about The Story of Moses and the Seder Meal in preparation for their performance during Holy Week. More details to follow!

Please continue to reflect on and collect for Rice Bowls! Please turn them in the week of April 11.

This Spring we are planning a study of the world’s greatest artists with your children. Your child will learn about several of the world’s most famous artists in conjunction with the book EIEIART by author Mari Tzikas Suarez. The students will study the artists, share information that they’ve learned about the artists and create an art piece in the style of the artist.  It has been a fun and creative unit in the past for students.More information will follow after Easter break.

***Coming home in Friday Folders:  Our first Research Report, All About Polar Bears.  We gathered information, completed prewriting activities, labeled a diagram, drew pictures, recognized areas for headings and wrote sentences.  The students worked very hard completing this project together as a shared writing project.  They will complete their own research project in the month of April!  This was a big project that we completed over a period of time.  They were very proud…ask them about it!!

There will be no April homework due to Holy Week and Easter.

Our SuperKid for next week will be Lorenzo. Thanks to Evelyn for sharing her things.

Mrs. Foster thanks all families for the lovely birthday gift!  The board, napkins and dip mix fit with one of her favorite things…cooking for her family!
